Tennis Scoring FAQ
How does tennis scoring work?
Tennis uses a unique scoring system. Points within a game go 0 (love), 15, 30, 40. Win 4 points to win a game, but you must win by 2 at deuce (40-40). Win 6 games to win a set, and win 2 or 3 sets (depending on format) to win the match. If games reach 6-6, a tiebreak is usually played.
What is a tiebreak in tennis?
A tiebreak is a special game played when a set reaches 6 games all. Players alternate serves, and the first to reach 7 points with a 2-point lead wins the tiebreak and the set. The tiebreak was introduced to prevent marathon sets and is used in most competitive tennis today.
What is the difference between advantage and no-ad scoring?
In advantage scoring, when the game reaches deuce (40-40), a player must win two consecutive points — first to gain "advantage," then to win the game. If the player with advantage loses the next point, it goes back to deuce. In no-ad scoring, the game is decided by a single sudden-death point at deuce, making matches faster.
What is the difference between best of 3 and best of 5 sets?
In best of 3, the first player to win 2 sets wins the match — this is the standard for most recreational play, WTA matches, and many ATP events. In best of 5, the first player to win 3 sets wins — this format is used in men's Grand Slam matches (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open).
How does serve rotation work in tennis?
Players alternate serving each game. The same player serves for the entire game, then the other player serves the next game. In a tiebreak, the player who received in the previous game serves the first point, then serves alternate every two points. Our scorekeeper tracks serving automatically.
Can I use this for doubles tennis?
Yes. Simply enter team names instead of player names (e.g., "Team A" and "Team B"). The scoring rules are the same for singles and doubles, and the scorekeeper works perfectly for both.
Does this work on my phone?
Absolutely. The scorekeeper is fully responsive and designed for phone use courtside. It works offline too — no Wi-Fi needed. Just open it in your phone's browser and start scoring.
